"What Battery?"

If you plan on camping for more than a couple of nights off grid/without EHU, then this is the what you need. Lithium leisure batteries are a bit more expensive, but prices have come down and over short period of time it will pay for itself. We've picked out a real bargain for you at the end of the guide, please let us know when it's sold out and we'll update the page.

A good Lithium battery combined with a good solar array is the difference between needing hook up or not.

Lithium LiFePO4

We'd reccommend Lithium LiFeP04 leisure batteries, when compared to the other alternatives they provide much more usable power, do not damage when discharged completely, smaller, lighter and will last much longer.. For example, if you have a 100ah (ah - Amp hours) lithium battery, you can use all of that 100ah. With an alternative battery type if you use more than half of your available 100ah (50ah) then you start to damage cells.

Lifespan

Batteries are classed by most manufacturers, as end of life when there is only 80% of the original charging capacity left. We will call a 50% discharge, one cycle. If you look below at the cycles available depending on the battery you're using, you'll see what we mean.

We compare the difference between battery types below, the power available and the lifetime of use varies massively. Lithium on average providing 7 times more power usage over their lifetime.

As you can see alternative battery types cannot compete with Lithium LiFeP04. There are many options and some appear to be a better deal than others, but do take into account more than just the ah power rating being promised. The are other factors to consider, the amount of cycles the LiFeP04 battery offers. Some offer just 4000 and some offer 15000, over 3 times longer lasting. The best price is not always the best battery.
